What is Vinyl Material?

Vinyl, also known as Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), is a synthetic plastic resin made from vinyl chloride monomers through a combination process of ethylene (found in crude oil) and chlorine (from common salt). Thanks to its superior mechanical properties, chemical resistance, UV resistance, and effective flame retardancy, Vinyl has become an ideal choice for manufacturing products applied in many industrial and lifestyle sectors.

Characteristics of Vinyl

Vinyl plastic is currently widely used in many fields due to its outstanding characteristics compared to many other types of plastic. Some notable features include:

  • Effective moisture resistance, helping to maintain durability in wet environments.

  • High durability and flexibility, suitable for many applications from industrial to consumer goods.

  • Can be produced in a variety of colors, from transparent to vibrant tones, meeting different aesthetic requirements.

  • Low production costs and easy recyclability make Vinyl an economical and environmentally friendly choice. Notably, Vinyl plastic contains up to 57% natural salt, reducing dependence on petroleum, thereby supporting the protection of natural resources.

Pros and Cons of Vinyl Material

Advantages of Vinyl Material

  • Vinyl has effective moisture and water resistance, protecting the material in high humidity conditions.

  • This is a synthetic plastic with high durability and good load-bearing capacity, suitable for various applications.

  • Vinyl can be produced in a variety of colors, from transparent to dark shades, meeting aesthetic requirements in many fields.

  • With lower production costs compared to many other materials, Vinyl offers economic value and is popular in the market.

  • Unlike other plastics, Vinyl can be recycled many times thanks to its durability, giving Vinyl products a longer lifespan.

  • Vinyl is environmentally friendly due to its recyclability, low emissions, and particularly its components from renewable raw materials.

  • Only 43% of Vinyl’s components are from crude oil, the rest comes from renewable natural salt, reducing dependence on non-renewable resources and protecting the environment.

Disadvantages of Vinyl Material

  • The color of Vinyl may fade if exposed to sunlight for a long time and there is a risk of damage when outdoor temperatures rise.

  • Products are prone to scratches when encountering sharp objects and do not withstand heavy loads, so care should be taken when placing or storing heavy items on Vinyl surfaces.

Common Applications of Vinyl in Workspace

Types of Vinyl Flooring

Anti-static Vinyl Flooring

When moving on the floor, the body can generate a static current of up to 5000V accumulating on the floor surface. Regular vinyl flooring helps reduce the static current to about 3500V. However, with anti-static vinyl flooring, the static level is controlled almost to zero; if any, it is only about 12V, which is completely safe and does not cause damage to equipment or give users an electric shock sensation.

Anti-static vinyl flooring is essentially a form of PVC flooring with many superior features. Manufactured from PVC resin, this floor has high elasticity, is soft, durable, and has effective resistance to scratches, slips, chemicals, bacteria, and mold.

Particularly, anti-static vinyl flooring does not crack or break, has good load-bearing capacity, minimizes noise, and has an almost perfectly flat surface with little to no seams. With its lightweight, easy installation, and maintenance, this type of flooring is the perfect choice for spaces requiring high safety and aesthetics.

Classification of Anti-static Vinyl Flooring

Vinyl Plank/Tile Flooring

Vinyl flooring is made from synthetic PVC resin, originating from vinyl – a synthetic material through crude oil distillation and chemical reactions. Vinyl flooring is popular in many countries and is increasingly favored in Vietnam due to its good adaptability to the climate.

With diverse designs, Vinyl flooring is often known through luxurious wood-imitation designs, meeting modern decoration needs. Outstanding advantages of Vinyl flooring include:

  • High slip resistance, good wear and scratch resistance.

  • Withstands high temperatures, has fire resistance.

  • Performs well in chemical environments.

  • Anti-warping, high elasticity, good load-bearing capacity.

  • Diverse colors, rich styles.

  • Water-resistant, anti-mold, termite-resistant, and anti-static capability.

  • Fast construction, cost-saving, easy maintenance.

  • Durability up to 20 years, ensuring a long lifespan.

Vinyl Sheet Flooring

Vinyl sheet flooring is a low-cost flooring material commonly used in residential spaces. The product is manufactured in large sheets with a width of 2 – 3m, length of 20 – 50m, and thickness of 1 – 3mm, so it is usually rolled up for easy storage. The floor structure consists of 5 layers from top to bottom:

  • UV coating to prevent fading.

  • 0.15mm nano coating for wear resistance.

  • Decorative paper layer.

  • PVC resin layer.

  • Base layer with high adhesive grip.

Vinyl sheet flooring is installed using glue (sold separately), requiring the subfloor to be absolutely flat to avoid surface lumps due to the material’s thinness and softness.

The price of vinyl sheet flooring ranges from 80,000 – 300,000 VND/m² (reference price).

Antibacterial Vinyl Flooring

Antibacterial vinyl flooring, also known as homogeneous vinyl flooring, is the ideal material for flooring in hospitals, schools, and research labs. This type of floor is specially designed to protect user health and prevent bacteria from entering the space.

The structure of antibacterial vinyl flooring is simple and effective, including:

  • Base layer: Has a textured surface to enhance glue adhesion.

  • Core layer: Virgin PVC resin mixed with additives for stability and color powder to create decorative patterns.

  • Surface coating: Uses PUR glue or UV coating, helping to resist scratches, fading, and water penetration.
